Jeffrey Kim, Ph.D.
Jeffrey Kim is the director of INSER. He received a PhD in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine.
Jeffrey’s general research interests are knowledge management, distributed teams and collaboration, technology support for collaborative work, technology and innovation, systems analysis and design, social and organizational aspects of computing. His current research focuses on the organizational changes and information technologies in knowledge-intensive firms. His research investigates the ongoing relationship among information technologies, work practices, and organizational structure. He has conducted field studies on the role of technology for distributed teams and their collaboration and knowledge-sharing practices in the semiconductor and aerospace industries as well as scientists in biotechnology and medicine. Jeffrey has collaborated with industry partners including Intel, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Fourth Wall Studios, 42 Entertainment, Samsung, Toshiba, Hynix, and Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). Currently, he is examining the social and technological aspects of boundary-spanning collaboration in online communities.
Gael Tarleton is a Senior Advisor to INSER, and also Manager of Partnerships and New Initiatives for the Pacific Rim Visualization and Analytics Center (PARVAC). At UW, Gael has focused on connecting faculty and students across UW to tackle the most important safety and security challenges of our generation. From regional preparedness to nuclear proliferation to human security, she has fostered partnerships that advance research and understanding. Gael built science and technology collaborations between the United States and Russia while working at SAIC during the 1990s. She started her career in Washington, D.C. as a research analyst in the national intelligence community, where she developed a life-long appreciation for how to collect, analyze, and distribute data to help people solve complex problems. Gael is also a part-time elected official, serving as Seattle Port Commissioner.
